Usedkit › Waitlist for sold items
A waitlist for items that already sold
A used item sells once. The buyer who comes a day later finds "sold", leaves, and buys elsewhere. Back-in-stock alerts can't keep them, because a used item never comes back in stock. Here's why, and what works instead.
Why back-in-stock alerts don't work for used goods
A back-in-stock app watches one product's stock and emails when it rises above zero. With new goods that happens: the shop reorders and the same product returns.
With used goods it never does. The next camera of the same model is a new product, with its own title, condition, photos and price. The customer who signed up on the sold one is waiting on a product that will stay sold forever.
- Each item is its own product, so stock goes from 1 to 0 and stays there.
- Titles differ: "Sony A7 III body", "Sony Alpha 7 III (ILCE-7M3)", "A7III, used".
- Reusing one product for every unit loses the sold item's history, reviews and search ranking.
What a waitlist for used goods needs
- Match by model, not by product: the customer waits for "a Sony A7 III", whatever the next one is called.
- A form on sold items, where the late buyer actually is.
- One email when a match is listed, with its photo, price and link, while it's still for sale.
- An optional maximum price, so they hear only about the ones they'd buy.
- Double opt-in and a one-click unsubscribe, so the list is lawful in the EU and stays clean.
Your options
Keep a list by hand: works for a handful of customers, but nobody checks a spreadsheet each time they list something, and the customer hears days late or never.
Bend a back-in-stock app: keep one product per model and edit its stock and photos for each unit. It works until two of the same model are in stock, and it loses every sold item's page.
Use a waitlist built for used goods: it reads your product titles, knows which model each one is, and tells everyone waiting when you list the next one. That's what Usedkit does.
On WooCommerce and Shopify
On WooCommerce, install the Usedkit plugin from the WordPress.org directory (Plugins → Add New Plugin, search "Usedkit"). The form appears on sold products; the emails go out from Usedkit's service when you publish a match.
On Shopify, it's the Shopify app (in review for the App Store; available soon): a "Notify me" block for the product page, added in the theme editor.
Is a waitlist like this allowed under GDPR?
Yes, with consent: the customer asks to be told, confirms by email (double opt-in), and every email has a one-click unsubscribe. Usedkit sends only the emails the customer asked for.
What about items that aren't models, like vintage clothing?
Matching then works on the words in the title, such as brand, type and size. It's most precise for goods sold by model: cameras, lenses, hi-fi, instruments, bikes, phones, watches.
Does it slow my shop down?
No: the matching and the emails run on Usedkit's service, not on your server. The shop sends its products when they change.
