Selling used lenses

A lens buyer cares about the glass first and the barrel second. Check the optics properly and say what you found.

What buyers ask first

Checking the optics

Shine a bright torch through the lens from behind, in a dark room, and look at it from the front at an angle. Dust shows as specks and rarely affects images. Haze shows as a milky glow; fungus as threads or spots like frost. Scratches on the front element show as lines. Say which you see, and where.

How to grade a used lens

Pricing it

Price from what the same lens sells for used, adjusted for its optics above all. Kamarvo shows used market prices for lenses across shops; a lens with clean optics and caps sells close to the top of that range, one with haze well below it.

Selling them in a web shop

Each used item is its own product, sold once. Two things make that work: a condition every buyer reads the same way, shown on the product and in the product list, and a way to keep the buyer who arrives after it sold.

Usedkit adds both to WooCommerce and Shopify: a condition card with the details buyers ask about, and a "notify me" on sold items that matches by model, so the next one reaches everyone who waited.

Does dust inside a lens matter?

Rarely for image quality: every lens collects some. Say it's there and show it; buyers mind surprises more than dust.

Can fungus be cleaned?

Sometimes, by a repairer, but it can etch the coating. Grade a lens with fungus For parts unless it has been cleaned and the result checked.
